Editorial Standards
How we source, write and correct what we publish.
Sources
Every factual claim should be traceable. We link to primary sources wherever we can: the text of a bill, a court ruling, a peer-reviewed study, or official agency data. When we rely on reporting from another outlet, we name and link it. Statistics include where they came from.
Scope
We cover the United States. When a law or policy varies by state, we say so.
Opinion and analysis
We have a point of view, and we don't hide it. Our tone is part support, part satire, and a little angry. We keep facts and opinion distinct: facts are sourced, and analysis is written so you can tell it's ours.
Health and legal information
We explain research, laws and policies so readers can understand their options. We do not give medical or legal advice. Articles about health or law point readers to professionals and organizations who can help with their own situation.
AI tools
We use AI tools to help with research, drafting and illustration. A person reviews every article before it publishes and checks its facts and sources. Many of our illustrations are created with AI tools.
Corrections
When we get something wrong, we fix it and add a note to the article saying what changed and when. Report an error by emailing [email protected] with the article link.
Independence
We do not accept payment for coverage. Organizations featured in Local Spotlights do not pay to be included.
